Opposite Town
exactly how I’m creating miracles this month.
Written June 29, 2026
On June 29, 2026, 10:36 AM PST, Mercury stations retrograde at 26º15’ of Cancer.
You know the drill:
Fender benders, broken appliances, chaotic communication, and tech mishaps. But the truth of this transit is more complex, more nuanced.
I was thinking about this early today as I raged against passive-aggressive Slack messages, spilled coffee grounds, and a Tesla truck parked in a compact spot.
You might have heard rumors that retrogrades happen for you, not to you – a conspiracy of energies here to help you find the mental-emotional threads that need snipping or tying off.
It feels true, right? There’s more energy than usual bathing the collective. A visceral intensity that makes the highs feel higher and the lows lower, all colluding to get those stuck energies to come up and come out!
But to keep that in mind throughout the chaos? That’s a big ask. Which is why I created a VERY simple framework to help you take your power back and actually grow through the mayhem rather than admit defeat.
Because all that old stuff? The stuff that’s trying desperately to process and release, but can’t because you’re too busy scrolling and watching Office reruns? They’re sapping your energy like crazy, babe. And that’s keeping you from creating great things. So, let’s get into it.
How to Open Your Treasure Chest of Knee-Jerk Reactions
According to the sages, the most profound spiritual growth comes not from your Bali retreat or your twelfth Ayahuasca ceremony, but from the small shifts you make every day to get out of your comfort zone.
The comfort zone is your map.
Bypassing it (especially when you don’t feel like it) is exactly how you’ll expand your energy and witness miraculous change in your life.
It all starts with noticing. That’s it. When the expensive thing breaks, when you get another rejection email, when you miss an important flight… just notice your knee-jerk reaction — this is the gold.
Do you crave a drink? Reach frantically for your phone so you can trauma dump on your best friend? Make a booty call?
Now, once you’ve noticed, stay here. In the silence. In the doing-nothingness of it all.
It sucks, huh? I know. But just stay with it for a little while longer. Start processing in writing or in a voice memo to yourself if you must, but stay with the feeling.
Start to ask what’s going on underneath.
For example, when someone at work asks me to do something last minute that I think is dumb, is my rage really directed at them? Do I truly wish death and destruction on their entire bloodline?
No. When I pause, breathe, and stay with the feeling, it shifts. Suddenly, it becomes clear that I’m actually just bummed because I have a deep desire to write this post instead. To pour my soul out on paper. To escape, even for an hour, the lifeless, mechanical, AI-generated marketing slop that so aggressively pulls at my time and attention.
Once that becomes clear, I have a choice to make:
Do I default to what I always do: finish the work assignment to get it off my plate?
Or do I make the grounded decision to write this post before I respond at all?
When every past version of me would have spent the entire day ticking things off an endless to-do list of tasks for other people, writing this post becomes sacred, spiritual work.
Welcome to: Opposite town.
What is Opposite Town?
Opposite town is simple: You take a minute to feel (really feel) into what’s coming up for you at any given moment. Most likely, when something in your life triggers a reaction, and your body starts tingling with anger, sadness, frustration… the temptation to curse an entire bloodline – things like that.
Then, you tune into what’s really going on underneath. (Just try it, it’s a muscle you may have to re-learn how to use.)
Then, think to yourself: what would I normally do in this moment?
Then: do the opposite. Doing the opposite is the action that breaks repetitive loops and redirects attention and energy to realities you’d rather reside in.
That’s it! It’s simple and wildly effective. Also, now you never have to read another post about “timeline jumping” because I just taught you how. You’re welcome.
A Spotlight on Emotions
This retrograde in Cancer, the celestial spotlight is on your emotions.
Girl, I love emotions. I have entire playlists curated for crying. Movies I watch just to feel something. Love affairs I consciously start even though I know they’ll end badly.
But I don’t always take my emotions seriously.
I honor them, but that’s different. I listen and validate them like I would a toddler wailing at the violent injustice of wanting a popsicle, but not THAT popsicle.
But I rarely take them too seriously because feelings are sometimes liars. SOMETIMES, they’re unprocessed, subconscious swamp water that needs cleansing, but they don’t necessarily have to mean anything.
All of that said, they deserve to be heard. Just like the screaming child.
And retrogrades are portals where everything is intensified to a pitch we can’t ignore. ON PURPOSE!
Of course, that means leaning into every moment that feels like a slip on a cosmic banana peel.
Examining all the ways the people can’t seem to love you in the exact ways you need them to.
Questioning your habitual ways of thinking and communicating.
Making more space to recognize and process the impact of past experiences and unprocessed emotions.
It’s not always easy, but it’s wildly transformative.
So, while I love the classic Mercury Retrograde tools (I store all of those here), I think you’ll get a lot out of this practice.
Here’s an example of what opposite town could look like in real life:
I’m a bit sadder, more tired, and more anxious than usual. My nervous system is on high alert for threats of all kinds, closing my heart to care and compassion from the people who love me. None of it makes sense on paper – life is objectively good, I am loved, and I’m not even luteal.
Normally, I’d wake up on a day like this and mainline caffeine, open my computer, and dive into client work until I’d reached some mythical point of completion on a never-ending to-do list. (My sister in Christ, all to-do lists, by their very nature, are never-ending. It’s really time to drop the self-imposed shackles of productivity omg.)
Instead, I brew some decaf and sit for a moment until I understand what my soul is craving. Sure, I check in with work, but I believe it when I see rows upon rows of empty Slack channels.
Still, every nerve ending is begging me to start on some projects that are objectively late.
Instead, I open this Google doc and start writing. The first several paragraphs sound just as forced and soulless as the marketing copy I generate for my clients. But, after a few minutes, it starts to flow.
I get up, get dressed in something cute and head out to my very romantic co-working space. I’m feeling rushed, short on time, and have a pile of things to get done before 4pm. Driving for 15 minutes doesn’t make much sense when I have a perfectly pleasant home office.
But… opposite town.
Once I’m settled in with another cup of (half-caff) coffee, I realize I’ve left my reading glasses at home, making this whole seeing thing rather unpleasant. Then, the coffee isn’t very good. I’m still anxious about work.
Normally, this is where my day would end. Do-over. I’d pack up, get back in the car, and drive home in defeat.
I go inward again. What do I need right now? Are emotions asking to be processed? Should I just take the day off? I resist the urge to lie and tell everyone I’m sick. I battle the temptation to drive to the mall and bury the discomfort in a pile of clothes and shoes I don’t want or need.
I sit and force myself to write. It feels good to express myself. I gaze around at the same mahogany wood paneled walls Garry Marshall saw when he looked up from a half-finished script.
A friend sends me a copy of her next Substack post – a preview before it’s published – and I’m transported by her words. Inspired. I keep writing.
A handsome man walks in and we lock eyes. We both smile.
I finish this piece.
Mercury as the Harbinger of Change
Mercury loves movement. Progress. A trick or two. But it’s not here to ruin your life. Quite the opposite. In fact, the second you start to look at Mercury Retrograde (and all hardships, tbh) as a series of sacred course corrections, your life will get noticeably better.
There are plenty of other ways to work with Mercury, the fiery god of communication, commerce, travel, and trade. I outline a lot of them in the Mercury Retrograde Grimoire inside the Sol Society.
But I’ll reiterate the most important homework for the month here:
Your key to miracles are simple: create more space for feeling your emotions, for magic. And go outside your comfort zone.
Where is your life feeling constricted? Where are you really sure you’re right?
Open yourself up to new experiences, new ways of doing things.
Oh, you’re not a morning person? Try setting your alarm and heading to the gym first thing.
You’ve given up on love? Hit on that hot guy at your co-working space.
You’re sure you’re right in that argument with your partner? I challenge you to think about their perspective.
You’re going to mess up.
Things will break.
You’ll remember your tennis shoes the second you pull up to the gym.
You’ll answer the phone when your ex calls.
And none of that has to mean anything as long as you take the time to feel, to notice, and to practice opposite town.
How to Turn Theory into Practice
Everything I write here is part of a great experiment: turning an ordinary life into a magical one through folk magic, creative expression, and the art of being human.
The Sol Society is where I teach what I’ve learned after years of study, practice, and living this work. Every month, you get a full curriculum, a living library of videos, live healing and spellwork demonstrations, and more.
It’s my mission here to teach you that magic isn’t something reserved for a gifted few. It’s a way of moving through the world that’s available to anyone willing to cultivate a deeper relationship with themselves, nature, and energies we all have access to.
If you’ve been looking for people who speak this language, you’ll fit right in:
Magic is real, and so is medicine. Nothing I share here is meant to replace mental health care, medical treatment, or the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals. It’s just jazz, baby.
